The Possession' took control of the top spot at the box office over the Labor Day weekend.

The horror film from Lionsgate scared up the biggest box-office haul of any movie this weekend, taking in $17,725,000 through Sunday, according to early numbers from Hollywood.com. Final figures are due out Monday.

'Lawless' (Weinstein Co.) placed second with $9,674,000 and 'Expendables 2″ (Lionsgate) took the third spot with $8,800,000.

'The horror genre seems to always have a built-in audience and 'The Possession's' solid performance will kick off a string of horror movies set for the Fall and Holiday period with at least six more in the queue,' Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office division of Hollywood.com, said via email. Other coming horror movies include 'House at the End of the Street,' the kiddie movie 'Hotel Transylvania,' and 'Paranormal 4.'

The anti-Obama documentary '2016: Obama's America' (Rocky Mountain Pictures) placed ninth with $5,103,382.

'It's playing remarkably well considering how many theaters it is now playing in, but the per-theater average is of course going down with more empty seats for Clint Eastwood to chat with in theaters,' Mr. Dergarabedian said. He said widespread news coverage of the movie is helping to attract filmgoers. 'Lots of coverage equals huge awareness = big bucks,' he added.
