Pressure from British politicians and investors mounted on security contractor G4S over its failure to provide enough security guards for the imminent Olympic Games, as more police joined the military in helping to make up the shortfall.

        The U.K. government said last week it was making available 3,500 more military personnel to help secure the Olympic Games. The U.K.-based company, the world's largest security contractor by employees, said Wednesday it was struggling to meet promised staffing requirements for the Games, which begin in less than two weeks. Two senior G4S executives are due to face questioning by a parliamentary committee on Tuesday about the shortfall.

        As athletes arrived in London from around the world for the first move-in day at the Olympics Village on Monday, the police said that as many as nine forces from around the U.K. had deployed officers to provide more support for the venue-security effort.

        G4S is being paid about ￡284 million ($440 million) to supply 10,400 guards out of a planned force of 23,700, with military personnel, police and volunteers filling out the total.

        G4S ran into problems training and vetting enough people to fulfill its contract. It said last week that it had nearly 4,000 people working at Olympic sites, and that there were more than 9,000 people going through final training, vetting and accreditation.

        Shares of G4S fell sharply Monday after the company said it expected to incur a loss on the Olympic contract of between ￡35 million to ￡50 million. Shares fell 8.7% to 254.6 pence Monday on the London Stock Exchange. That leaves the price more than 12% lower than the closing on Wednesday, before the government announced it was deploying more troops to make up for the company's staffing shortfall.

        Financial analysts said a bigger issue for the company is how the reputational damage from the handling of the Olympic contracts affects the company's ability to win government business in the future. About 10% of G4S's revenue comes from contracts with the U.K. public sector, such as police, prisons and welfare work, according to analysts.
